The Distance we Carry

Logline:

Two angelic beings, the one a stranger to Arnhem, the other a stranger to Yerevan, move through intimidating architecture, calming spaces and throngs of staring people, in search of what it means to connect and to belong. Combining poetic and observational approaches, the documentary becomes a meditation on the idea of acceptance as the crucial step in remedying upheaval and creating a home.

Theme

“Is it possible to find home between two worlds?” In answering this question, two directors explore the two unrelated cities of Yerevan (Armenia) and Arnhem (the Netherlands) through the metaphor of the fallen angel, in a documentary that reveals insights on the themes of belonging, identity and acceptance.

The Distance We Carry (working title) is a deeply personal film for co-directors Hasmik Gasparyan and Sean Fitzpatrick. The film’s emotional weight is centered around longing. The angels, just as migrants, exiles and the film-makers themselves, long to belong to a world that is morally stable and emotionally safe. The film leaves the viewer with the uneasy question of what if we as a society, don’t accept or embrace the strange, the unknown, the unfamiliar? Is the only other option then to continue on the downward spiral of alienation and exclusion?
